April 1, 2015 by Quin Leave a Comment

Disclosure

Ever wondered how to open a diary lock with a bobby pin? This post is for you!

Just a friendly #parenthack, #lifehack or whatev, in case you find yourself in the same predicament I was in this morning.  The rounded end of a bobby pin will pop these little locks open, easy peasy.
How To:
Stick the rounded end of the bobby pin into the lock.
Give it a little turn or jiggle.
It should slide the lock right open.
Now you know!

Are you using a bobby pin on a simple diary lock? I’m sorry you’re having trouble. I assure you if you just keep twisting and wiggling it WILL pop right open. Sometimes it takes a bit. Hopefully you can get it if you give it another try. Best of luck!

I most certainly did not lie, that’s not how I roll. This method absolutely works. Have patience Daniel-san. Let’s remember who lost the key (that’s you) and ask them to take a deep breath, and carefully try again. I believe they can do this.

why would you invade your child’s privacy like that? I’m sure you wouldn’t like if someone hacked into say, your phone and looked at all of your personal things.

This was certainly not an invasion of privacy; however I do have thoughts on the fine line between invasion of privacy and ignoring warning signs or safety issues, especially while my children live under my roof. The predicament we were in was my daughter had locked and then tucked her key INSIDE of her treasure chest, for safe keeping. She had no way of opening it without the key, so we had to get creative to get it open. It was something we did together.

Well, this post isn’t just read by parents. I usually lose my key within the first week, so this was quite helpful. (Besides, since when do parents respect their kids privacy?)

I couldn’t get it to work because the lock was too small. I put one side of needle-nosed pliers in and popped it open easily.

It may depend on the size of lock. Great tip!

Do you have the same type of lock? If so, just be patient and keep working with it.

I just used a standard bobby pin found at a dollar store or Wal-Mart. I see this is an older comment, I hope you were able to get it open.

OMG, you’re right. I was trying to open an antique diary of my mother’s. And this method worked. But I had to keep trying. The lock had a button that had to be pushed toward the lock, so I pushed that, worked the lock with the bobby pin, and pulled on the part I was trying to unlock. It worked. 🙂 Thank you!
