3 Mudroom Hacks You Can ACTUALLY Do!

January 16, 2016 by Quin Leave a Comment

asbwMUDROOM

This past fall we were on one of our regular IKEA trips when I found myself wandering areas of the store that I didn’t even belong in. My husband caught me in a trance staring at dish drainers. He walks up and says “Why would we want one of those?” He had a point. We’ve lived in this house 10+ years and haven’t needed one yet, but I still couldn’t stop gawking at them.

They were so simple, but so sophisticated. The construction was solid, and the powder coated metal frame felt good in my hands. I tried thinking as fast as I could about how I could justify purchasing one, knowing I wasn’t going to use it in the kitchen, and there was a chance I wouldn’t use it at all.

Insert a random “Quincey Idea”, as my husband would call it.
I begged him to just listen to me for a minute, and reminded him that he’d be rewarded with a frozen yogurt cone at the end of our trip if he had good behavior and displayed patience. 😉

I pieced together and blurted out the idea that they could be used under the window in our mudroom. They’d be placed over the vent and the kids could put their hats and gloves on it to dry after they’d been out playing in the snow.

He hesitated a little, but he could tell I wasn’t going to budge, so he agreed to let me put it in the cart. Then I did the unthinkable…. I asked for a second one! “Sure” he says, as he trailed away looking for that promised cone.
I picked up two of the drainers and one rail. Because the rack can hang over edges of the rail it didn’t matter that the width dimensions would be a couple inches different.

I ditched the bottom plastic tray that came with the rack, because I wanted the air to be able to flow better.

We’ve been using this setup for a two months and it’s working extremely well! Thank goodness for that, because I don’t know how many more of my quirky ideas this guy will agree to before he puts me on house arrest and cuts up my credit card!

Here’s all you need:

2 Bygel Dish Drainers & 1 Bygel Rail

Safety Warning: Whenever you’re drilling into your walls, be sure you know where the studs and electrical lines are. A Stud Finder is a must for a DIY’er that likes to take on Home Improvement projects! Thankfully I have my own personal stud to run our Stud Finder! Bahaha, I’m so cheeeeesy!

Hack # 2:

Install a couple of simple Command Hooks (and yes, it’s driving me crazy that they don’t match, but it’s what I had on hand).

The white one obviously is holding a basket, and that’s so the toddler can reach her own gloves and hat.  The Brushed Nickel is for her coat.  I can’t believe how well it holds even with her tugging her big winter coat off of it each day.

Hack #3:

For hack numeral three I used more command hooks!  This was a flighty idea, but it has proved to work well!  I put two hooks on the back of the door for my big kids to hang their soaking wet snow pants when they come in from outside.  This way they drip onto the entry rug, and not our beautiful built-in oak hall tree.

Bonus Real Life Snippet:

This is what I WANT this area to look like:

Here is what it actually looks like on a typical day:

The kids have baskets on the hall tree to put their winter gear into once it’s dry, so it isn’t supposed to linger on the rack, but it does.  And really people, just set your boots up straight!  haha, oh well, I’m just happy we know where everyone’s hats and gloves are now!

My Heart Today: The Orphans

October 4, 2015 by Quin Leave a Comment

Photo Courtesy of  Courtney Lorenz Photography.
My family and I drove home from church today in our Town and Country van.  We bought it new, had it custom-fit for our family, and delivered to the same dealership where we had bought our last minivan, just a couple years before that.
When we got home the kids got their top of the line Razor scooters out and rode around our driveway in front of our 3 stall garage.
I was a little worried about our youngest getting stains or scuffs on her new jeans since I just took the tags off of them this morning.
They’re kind of tight, but I don’t want to mess with returning them, so I think she’ll wear them for a few weeks and we’ll pass them on to someone else.  We aren’t hard-pressed for clothing right now.
My husband took off his pressed button-up collared shirt and changed into an American Eagle sweatshirt and stood on the plush carpeted floor for our living room with his nearly new Nike tennis shoes.
From there he turned on our 50 inch LED TV, that we also bought brand new, and sat down to watch some football.
I came out to start typing some thoughts that were on my mind after the sermon this morning, and our oldest daughter is now happily doing a craft at the kitchen island.
Soon I’m going to join her and we are going to decorate our pumpkins we picked up on a fun family outing to a pumpkin patch yesterday.
Our middle son has a friend over and they’re playing with Legos.  I cringe at the thought of how many hundreds of dollars worth of Legos we have floating around this 10-year-old house that we designed ourselves.  What a difference it would make if even HALF that money was put towards feeding the hungry.
My point here is this:  Gosh our life is good and while ordinary, or common, it really really quite luxurious.  And I’m pretty sure we’re considered middle class.  There are people that have it even “better” than we do in terms of material items.
Now I promise you it hasn’t always been this good; we have had struggles in our marriage, in a custody battle, in finances, etc.
But those struggles I’m telling you about, even though they were tough to endure, and seemed nearly impossible at the time were just that, ‘for a time’.
“First Word Problems” is how I’d hashtag all that stuff.
I am heartsick for orphans.  I have had sympathizing tears streaming down my face all morning wondering how on earth I can help these children in need.  I’ve prayed for these children for years, but now I want to use my own two hands to care for them.
I can prove that I can fiercely love a child I didn’t birth, because I’ve been doing it since our oldest was just a year old (through step-parent adoption, and Christ’s Love).  I even fiercely love her birth momma and pray for her on the regular, but that situation is tougher than I can articulate through a blog post (maybe someday).
Never mind the fact that I know in my heart I love all children I meet, even the random children that play with my kids at the park for an afternoon, or the neighbor kids who stay for supper, or the kiddos who play video games in our basement.
Lord, I KNOW my heart is aching for these children who need homes, for a way to serve the poor, care for the weak and needy.
But HOW?!  How God, do I do that without giving up too much of my cushy life? How do I get my family on board?  Where is the community of people you talk about in the Bible?  Because I’m going to need their support to do
this.
Why aren’t we ALL adopting?  How do my husband and I agree to take on the tough stuff like this, when I feel like we’ve already endured so much of the tough stuff and now it’s “our turn” to just enjoy life while it is good?
Or maybe it’s time I do give up some of this cushy life. Maybe it’s time I quit pinning all the things I want in a new home on my Pinterest board and shift my focus to your sweet orphans.
Lord, can you send me some pins that teach me how to do that?  I wish YOU, Lord, coud e-mail me a link to a blog post that describes my heart, and shows me a step-by-step outline of what comes next?  Because God, if you don’t send it through my e-mail, there is a strong chance I may totally miss it.  You see I’m fired up right now, but I know my wandering heart, it’s going to be checking Facebook and trying a new cookie recipe from the internet in less than a couple hours from now.  I’m going to get a Gap or Children’s Place e-mail with a coupon code and fully take advantage of that-  But what I WANT to do, is live for you.  I want to care for your children, but my e-mail hasn’t shown up yet telling me how to do this.
On a day by day basis I am so focused on materialistic and earthly things.  I’m so sick of it.  I’m ready to live a deeper life that is beyond ME and all about YOU.
Show me how.

DIY: Convert a Standard Kid’s Bike Into a Balance Bike

April 3, 2015 by Quin Leave a Comment

Not to brag, but I really love teaching kids to ride their bikes, and most of the kids love learning too!
One of the quickest ways to teach them to ride without training wheels is to first teach them to balance on two wheels.

In order to learn balance, they need to be able to reach the ground.  Remember that when buying a bike.  That’s super important.  Don’t buy a bike too big for your child, or you’re just asking for trouble.  Yes, I know it’s tempting to save a few bucks by buying a larger one they can use for a little longer, but it’s usually not worth it for their safety, and for their comfort level.

We have a tiny blue bicycle I picked up from a garbage pile a few years ago.  It was actually pink at the time, and maybe even from the 70’s.  Even though it clearly looked like garbage, my heart whispered that it was special.  So I brought it home, and with the help of my brother and my husband, we refurbished it.

I think I’ve taught 7 kids to ride without training wheels on that bike.  The first day or so we work on balancing by just using their feet on the ground, no peddles.  Then once they get going pretty smooth that way, we incorporate the peddles.  Works every time!

I’m sure you’ve heard of the craze with Balance Bikes, right?  I personally love them, but think they are WAY over priced.  Now to be honest, we did just get a  Strider No-Pedal Balance Bike for our youngest daughter, because we couldn’t modify one on our own to be short enough for her.  And because we got a crazy good deal on it that I just couldn’t refuse (Thank you Strider and Amazon!).

But just for fun, we made one for our son!  He’s 7 and has been riding the neighbor girl’s balance bike every chance he gets for a year, so I knew he would actually use this.

We converted his old $40 Wal-Mart bike into a balance bike in about 15  minutes, using a super helpful YouTube Video.  You can find used bikes EVERY WHERE.  Facebook, thrift stores, garage sales, etc.

I could try to write up steps for you, but honestly this guy covered it so well that I’m just going to direct you over to him:

Dyson DC28 Hose Replacement

July 2, 2014 by Quin Leave a Comment

For over a year now {maybe two, I have lost track} I have been duct taping, and re-duct taping the hose on my Dyson dc28.
Dyson’s are great vacuums, the problem was I tried to stretch the hose
all the way down the basement stairs while someone stood at the top
holding in the vacuum in place for me.  It tore a little and a little tape
fixed it fine… but I kept doing it.
Yeah…  I know..
After several layers of tape, and feeling frustrated every time I used
it I decided it was time for a new hose.
I picked this new one up on Amazon for about $20. It’s a generic but works perfect!  Installing it was a breeze!  Just disconnect the original hose the way you would put another attachment on. Then at the base of the hose is a little tab you pull out and force the hose up & off.
Reverse that to add the new hose.
Voila!
What repairs have you been putting off? More importantly, what are you going to do about it?

Intentional Parenting

May 9, 2014 by Quin Leave a Comment

Let’s talk about being intentional in our parenting. Although many great things do happen spontaneously, I believe that even greater things can happen when we are joyfully being intentional.
What are you doing to intentionally spend time with your kiddos?  I’ll go first.
Well for starters, we are recognizing “screen free week” in our house.  Notice I say recognizing, not fully
partaking.  I’d like to say I’m 100% on board, but to be honest, I’m missing out on too much!  No joke, two days off of Facebook and I feel like I don’t have a clue what is going on in real life conversations because
everyone is talking about what they read on Facebook… & I have obligations to fulfill through FB and e-mail.  So I
check my FB about once or twice a day strictly for messages or about something someone mentioned needed my attention.  That’s not anywhere near as often as I was getting online.  It’s been a good cleanse and I hope to continue in this new pattern.
This week to be intentional I’m busting out the craft supplies!  We painted {in our carpeted
dining room} twice this week!  I put my phone aside, ignored any beeps for new text messages until we were done, and just focused on my kids.  It was so much fun!  I really adored the time with my littles.  We laughed, we talked, we created.  We looked back at what we made and talked some more about our time together.  Oh it’s been so fun!
We also got outside each day.  Even if only for a short time, we were out there, and we were together.  It’s pure
joy, raising these little people.  I just can’t quite explain it, but I am as happy as can be to be their momma.

Christmas Cheer: Simple Gift

December 19, 2013 by Quin Leave a Comment

Here’s a very simple gift for anyone on your list.
We won big at our town Christmas Celebration (I’m talkin’ grand prize kind of big.  It blessed our socks off, folks!).  It was such a great surprise that we chose to turn some of that money back into blessing others.
I purchased some $5 gift cards from the local coffee shop.  I also asked for a cup for each card, because I think it makes cute packaging.
We stopped at another local store to buy some candy for filling.

The basics

Put the envelope in first.

Fill with candy and snap the lid on.

Some of the cups have ornaments or other things in them.  After looking at these I wish I would’ve bought more candy for filling (or eaten less while we were filling them).  I also wish I would’ve bought candy canes to stick in the straw holes.  That’s what I did a few years ago, and it really adds a nice touch.

As a bonus, the kids got to help with this project.  What kid doesn’t love playing with candy, right?  We did color sorting, patterning, adding, multiplication and division.  Oh, and a little taste testing.  For quality control, ya know?

Merry Christmas!

Show me the mother and I’ll show you the child quote

December 17, 2013 by Quin 2 Comments

Show me the mother and I'll show you the child.

At the suggestion of a friend, I just started watching Army Wives.  I really didn’t need another show to watch.

I’m good with just Parenthood.

I love the story lines, even when they make me cringe.  um, hello Julia?  What are you doing?!

I’m only a dozen-ish episodes in on Army Wives (watching on Netflix) & towards the end of one of the episodes I hear the line:

“Show me the mother and I’ll show you the child.”
O.M.GOSH
That just kept echoing in my head days after I heard it.  It made me think about how similar our children are to us.
Good and bad.
My oldest daughter is compassionate and shows great patience.
I like to think she gets those gentle traits from me.
On the other hand, my daughter says nasty things about junk food… in front of people who are eating it!  How embarrassing!   Naturally, she wouldn’t know how bad junk food was, if it weren’t for me telling her!
It’s not that I want her to think junk food is good, I believe she needs to know the truth.
I realize though, that while explaining healthy food choices to her, I have failed to teach her how to still be respectful of the dietary choices others make (and honestly, we make sometimes too).
Then I realize, maybe I too am too quick to judge.  And that is a classic example of:
“Show me the mother and I’ll show you the child.”
So as a resolution, I am going to keep letting this phrase echo through my head and use it to shape myself into a better mother.
Perhaps you’d like to do the same?

Design: Ikea Shelf for Cars

November 11, 2013 by Quin Leave a Comment

I’ll start with letting you know, this little project would’ve been cheaper, had we made the shelves ourselves.  That was our (my husband’s) intention.
We were at Ikea back in the spring and I really wanted these Ribba Ledges.
I told my husband how cute they would be for books and cars.  I told him I wanted 2 for each kid.  To which he responded “No way, look at how expensive that would be.  I can make those way cheaper, and we already have the white paint”.
True.  But I know that well meaning man.  I knew by his tone that these shelves weren’t getting made.
Nevertheless, I agreed, like a good wife should.  Well, I made a deal really.  I think we may have even shook on it.   I told him that if the shelves weren’t built by the next time we came to Ikea that I was going to buy them.
I won.. sort of.. I mean I got the shelves, but sure paid a lot more than I wanted to.
We got these two long ones for the boy, then put a small one for books in my oldest daughter’s room.

18 inch doll PJ shirt & tu-tu

August 24, 2013 by Quin Leave a Comment

My oldest daugther has been wanting to learn how to sew.  We decided this week to go ahead and tackle her first sewing machine project!

Because it was her first project we started off simple. We took a onesie that no longer fit her baby sister and hemmed it into a PJ shirt for the doll.

Thrifty and fun!

After that we stitched up a little piece of elastic and tied tons and tons and tons…and tons more of tulle around it to form a tutu!

Success!  & the mother daughter bonding time was precious!

DIY: 18 Inch American Girl Knock Off Turns Into a BOY!

August 13, 2013 by Quin Leave a Comment

About a month ago I took the kids to the American Girl store. My oldest daughter loves their dolls, so I was looking to get a boy one for my son. When I realized how crazy expensive they were, I started searching the internet for a do it yourself (cheaper) option.
My sweet girl is trying to earn a new doll that looks like her mini-me.
The doll that she bought last year had blonde hair and blue eyes, looking a lot like her brother, so we decided to turn the old doll into a boy doll. This is what she gave her brother for his birthday. He likes it.
I removed the lipstick with nail polish remover & a q-tip.
My sister in law gave the doll a haircut at her salon.
We dressed this little guy in old Build A Bear clothes. The clothes were a little big.  I am imagine preemie or newborn clothes would fit really well.
Cheap, cute & fun!
