Practical Laundry Tips

July 7, 2014 by Quin Leave a Comment

Sign this to the tune of Let it go:
The laundry piles high on the
couch tonight
Not a maid to be seen.
My living room is consumed
Yes, it’s all for me.
Disclaimer: This is only two loads of laundry, usually there is FAR more.
As a homemaker I feel it’s my responsibility to be sure that there are clean clothes available for everyone in the house.
Now I am an odd duck who finds joy in doing laundry. I mean everything except putting it away, but I have little people who love to help with that. 🙂
Step 1-
Gather all the laundry into one spot.
Step 2-
Wash & dry all the loads you have for the day.
Step 3-
As a load comes out of the dryer I pull out shirts and hang them up right away, the rest get thrown on the couch.  If any shirts ended up missing out on the hang up step in the laundry room, they get flattened out nicely over the arm of the couch.
Step 4-
Wait for all the clean laundry to collect on the couch throughout the day. It’s not worth folding and leaving it there to be unfolded by the short people in the house.  It’s also not worth making several little trips to put away one sock or a towel when I know there will be many more to go with it.
Step 5-
Once all the CLEAN laundry is on the couch I separate into piles like this:
The Fashionista, The Drummer, Momma, bathroom washcloths/towels, kitchen napkins/towels, Hubby’s socks.
I fold bath towels, kitchen towels, my hubby’s undershirts & underwear.  I only fold those because they fit better into the drawer this way.  And I occasionally will fold The Baby’s clothes as I go.

That’s it, The rest are left as messy piles.
The big kids are responsible for putting their own clothes away in their rooms, & in the right places. They know that mom won’t iron their clothes if they put them away in a sloppy manner. So they are really good about taking care of them. 🙂
We all pitch in to put all the other piles away.  This method of folding, sorting and putting away goes really quick!
Tips:
* Pretty much always hang up shirts as they come out of the dryer.  No ironing!
*Teach kids to put their own clothes away, make it simple.  This does not need to be fun, and they don’t need a reward. It should just be one of their responsibilities. We start this expectation at about 2-3 years of age.
*Buy all matching socks for each person.
Then you aren’t stuck trying to figure out which sock belongs to which person and where the other mate is for it. If each person has 20 of the same socks then they just get thrown in a sock drawer and pulled out two at a time, no more matching up!  Can you tell mismatched socks were a time consuming joy sucker of mine? 😉
Separated piles
The Big Kids’ piles get thrown behind the couch.. Looks like someone changed too much and someone else hardly at all.

What is your method or what are your practical laundry tips?
You can post in the comments or if you blog, make a post about it and put it in the comments so I can link it up here.

Reflections from my 10 yr class reunion

July 6, 2014 by Quin Leave a Comment

Thoughts the day before my class reunion:
I’m not going!  But just in case I do, in the next 24hrs:
Drink water
Avoid carbs
Whiten teeth
Shave legs
Thoughts just hours before the reunion:
Crap, I ate carbs!
Could I buy one of those girdle things?
I really wasn’t cute in high school, so I’m sure no one is expecting much from me.
Thoughts minutes before waking in the door:
Suck in the tummy.
Smile. Be Happy.  Do not show fear.
What if no one remembers me?
I walked by a classmate outside who completely ignored me, but in the ugly-obvious way.  Like I saw you, made eye contact, and now I’m going to pretend like I don’t know you so you don’t bother me… I wanted to leave right then.  I begged…My husband wouldn’t let me.  Who invited him anyway? 😉 jk, I’m so glad he coaches me in awkward social situations.
Thoughts post reunion:
To the guys that were jerks in high school, and made no attempt to talk to me tonight, despite me smiling your way or actually saying hi; I hope you are sweet to your wives, instill confidence in your daughters and someday soften your hearts to the whole world.
There were a few people who went out of their way to say hi to me.  I was surprised and genuinely grateful for their kindness.
My “group” from high school was there.  They cracked me up all night.  I’m thankful for their friendship, even after not seeing each other hardly at all for the last 10 yrs.
I’m glad I skipped the $60 girdle, because the people I would’ve worn it to impress didn’t talk to me anyway.
It’s the end of the night, my head is resting on my pillow as I finish up this post.  I’m glad I went because I won’t have to wonder what it would’ve been like,  or be filled with regret for staying home.  But honestly, real true honesty here.. It was just okay. Good night world.

Dyson DC28 Hose Replacement

July 2, 2014 by Quin Leave a Comment

For over a year now {maybe two, I have lost track} I have been duct taping, and re-duct taping the hose on my Dyson dc28.
Dyson’s are great vacuums, the problem was I tried to stretch the hose
all the way down the basement stairs while someone stood at the top
holding in the vacuum in place for me.  It tore a little and a little tape
fixed it fine… but I kept doing it.
Yeah…  I know..
After several layers of tape, and feeling frustrated every time I used
it I decided it was time for a new hose.
I picked this new one up on Amazon for about $20. It’s a generic but works perfect!  Installing it was a breeze!  Just disconnect the original hose the way you would put another attachment on. Then at the base of the hose is a little tab you pull out and force the hose up & off.
Reverse that to add the new hose.
Voila!
What repairs have you been putting off? More importantly, what are you going to do about it?

Homemade Peanut Butter

June 24, 2014 by Quin Leave a Comment

We stopped in for a visit with my dad (AKA Grandpa) over the weekend.  He sent us home with two baggies of peanuts.  One for the kids, one for their daddy.
Well the kids and daddy put theirs together and here is what they made!
By the way, I am loving my $30 food processor from Amazon. Thank you to everyone who chimed in over on my facebook when I asked about them!  I didn’t want anything too big & fancy yet, as I am admittedly a bit of a kitchen utensils/supplies hog and am running out of room for all this stuff!
Also, I wasn’t really sure how much I was going to actually use it!
In the past we have made our peanut butter with a mortar and pestle. That method works REALLY great and is surprisingly, therapeutically fun!  These days however, I just have no time for that.
Simple steps:
1. Dump Peanut Butter, Oil & Honey into the food processor.
2. Turn it on and run it until you get to your desired creamy texture.  I didn’t measure at all, I’m sorry.  Just go with your gut.  It’s best to start with a little oil and add in more if needed.
3. ENJOY!
I stored the leftover in a mason jar in the fridge & put some into
these little plastic containers for my husband to snack on at work.

In The Kitchen: Homemade Hummus

June 4, 2014 by Quin Leave a Comment

Twice last week I ate meals with friends who brought hummus to share.  Mmm-mm-mmm.  Good food & good friends.  MY Fav.  I had made hummus a few years ago, then I kind of forgot about it.

It isn’t too expensive to buy, but I enjoy making things myself.  When I’m able.  But more honestly, when I feel like it! 🙂
Here’s the ingredients I used based on the back of the package, and several other blog posts with recipes that I sorted through:
  • One 15-ounce can chickpeas or garbanzo beans (I learned that these are basically the same thing, so find either one and you’re good to go)
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
  • 1/4 C. tahini (I found this at Fareway, it was $6.99, I am almost certain it has got to be cheaper somewhere else. This was the first time that I had actually seen it, so I bought it. It was next to the peanut butter . This makes sense because all it is is ground sesame seeds.  You could probably actually make your own if you had a good food processor and a whole bunch of sesame seeds, I had neither… hence the $7 I forked over)
  • Garlic, I imagine whatever you have on hand will probably work. fresh or powder would be best.
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • A dash of salt, or not.  I can’t really remember if I put this in.
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin, or a full teaspoon if you got busy talking with your kiddos and didn’t pay any attention to your recipe while you were scoopin’ until after the second scoop.  Not that I would do that or anything… (But if you do, it still turns out just fine!)
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons water
  • A dash of paprika for pretty

I tried crushing it all up in my mortar and pestle, but that got old real quick, so I transferred it all to the blender and blended a little at a time while stirring until it was smooth.  I really need to get a food processer, but since I don’t have one yet, this worked just fine.  I did all this with my sweet kitchen helper, my oldest daughter.  She’s 11, and like me, she LOVES all things cooking, baking, and homemaking.

In The Kitchen: Living Salad Bowl

June 4, 2014 by Quin Leave a Comment

Having a living salad bowl on my deck is just about my favorite thing right now.  It makes lunch time so easy!  It’s also a great way to add simple veggies to dinner.  My biggest high comes from seeing my picky eater snacking on it while he plays outside.
In each pot I planted:
Green leaf lettuce
Red leaf lettuce
Baby spinach
Green onions
I have another pot with basil (yummmmm) it has a plant in the center and seeds scattered around the rest that will hopefully grow soon.
After years of wanting to grow my own lettuce, I’m so glad I finally did it!

A Letter to my Children… & You

May 17, 2014 by Quin Leave a Comment

Written for my children, for when they are older and will understand it more.  But maybe you {my dear readers} could use this right now, too? I know I would benefit from these words being spoken to me daily.

My Dear Children,
I pray you are clinging tightly to Jesus.  Be ready. Be ready for whatever comes your way, whether you think it to be good or worry it may cause strife.
I want you to be BOLD in your conversations and in your actions. You can be bold, kindly.
Act as Jesus would.

Soften your hearts.  Drop your guard, & be genuine.  Yes, please, please be genuine.  And forgiving.
Don’t be afraid of a disappointment.  Do and say the things God lays on your heart so you have no regret over the things you left undone.
Time will run out.  You don’t have forever to do it all.  Your life on Earth will end. Make the time for the things that matter.  Quit hiding behind excuses that are inflicted by your insecurities.
They say people will forget what you’ve said but remember how you made them feel.  I hope you never forget the feeling of being absolutely positively loved by me, your momma.
I want you to be aware that in this life some people will work to twist your words and hurt you.  Please, when you can, stray from them.  Just stray.
Make your mark on the world & shine brightly.
Take time to heal your soul.  It needs refreshing more often than you’d think.
Take time to address any internal problems you feel arise.
Always be ready to move on.
It isn’t guaranteed that you will get a warning for when your time comes to meet our Heavenly Father, so just be ready.
Never forget to work in face to face conversations. I don’t care how easy social media is when you are older, it’s not the same as human contact.  Use it as a tool, do not let it distract you.
I want you to know how to play at least one tune on either guitar or piano.  Never turn down an opportunity to perform.
Smile, please?
When you meet “the one” never forget that they are the ONE. I believe we each only get one shot at marriage. Pray often for your spouse. Don’t be afraid to ask them to pray for you, be specific.  Love them fully and passionately.
Wherever there is bad, there is also GOOD.  Seek it out.
Regularly step out of your comfort zone and see how much you’ll grow.
Make time for fun!
When you need spiritual help, get it.  If you need counseling, get it. Never be ashamed to ask for help.
Don’t go this life alone.  Keep Jesus in your heart and goodness on your mind.
I.Love.You.
Momma

Home Organization: A New Bookshelf

May 16, 2014 by Quin Leave a Comment

Oh, Happy Day!  Mr. Awesome & the kids assembled this bookshelf for me while I was at a movie with friends this week.

He ROCKS for doing this!

I love seeing the big kids reading.
Today we are compiling the stacks of books from around the house onto this ONE bookshelf.  I’m keeping my expectations low, but hoping this gets organized and stays organized for at least the summer.  Once we get our groove for where the books go I’m going to borrow my dad’s label maker and mark the shelves.

Do you have any spectacular book organization methods to share?
This bookshelf is from the KALLAX line at IKEA.  You can see the details of the shelving unit on their web-site by clicking HERE.

On Mother’s Day

May 11, 2014 by Quin Leave a Comment

Hey, can we talk?  I know it’s Mother’s Day. How are you feeling about that? Be honest.
I hope no matter what your answer comes out like, I pray you are content. I know that may not be the case though.
Being a mom looks different to each of us.  Some of us came by it young, others later in life.  Some are going it alone, others with help. Some through pregnancy and birth, some by adoption, others may have a more painful story to tell. Even more may still waiting and wishing to become a mother.  {To you I say, be faithful to the Lord.  Your strength will rise as you wait for His perfect timing}.
No matter your story, own it.  It’s yours.

If you aren’t feeling so great about this day, for a materialistic reason, like:

  • The gifts weren’t your first choice, or maybe never arrived. Despite your obvious hints!
  • The kids keep fighting.
  • You’re spending the day with your in-laws & that was the one thing you requested NOT to do.
  • No one is helping with anything.
  • You’re cooking for yourself and everyone else when YOU want to be the one to be waited on.
  • Fill in the blank_______________________.
Whatever, okay.  I get it, I do.  It stinks to not get your way.  I just ask that you’d actively choose joy in this day.  To me it’s not a day so much to be honored by my husband and kids, but a day to honor myself in  positive thoughts and spreading good cheer. A day to feel blessed to be a blessing to my blessings (did you follow that one??)
If you’re struggling, repeat after me:
“I will not whine today…I will not whine today… For crying outloud I’m the mom here and I said I will not whine today!”
Alright, do whatever works for you.
Now if this day is tough because you’ve got emotional hurt.  That’s another story.  There is some very real pain in miscarriage, having your child removed from your care, or waiting for a child to enter your life.  To that I want to encourage you to turn to God.  He is the only one who can fully heal your pain.  It’s worth the work of unpacking how you feel.  You’re worth it. I can’t blog something on this that would be worthy of your reading.  It’s too deep.  You need Him.  And He’s there for you, ready to purify your heavy heart and heal you so you can move on, once and for all.
Ps.  One last request, which will probably go unanswered, but I will not whine… 😉 Could you keep the social media to a minimum? Relish in the day, not the # of likes and comments a picture of your gift gets you or whatev. Be fully engaged with the real-life activities you are doing, not what is happening in the virtual world.
HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!
One last thing.  It’s almost 1am & I’m sure this is full of typos.  If you’re new here, I’ll let you in on a secret.  I write quick and from the heart.  Days later I reread & find the mistakes.  Sometimes I fix them…sometimes I don’t.

In The Kitchen: Go-To Potluck Recipe

March 7, 2014 by Quin Leave a Comment

Between having both sides of our family living close by and being Lutheran, we host and attend a lot of potlucks!
I’d say for sure one a month, and through the summer even more.
Commonly on a potluck day I’m standing in the kitchen (an hour or two before it’s time to leave), phone in hand, staring at this screen:
The “easy last minute recipes” always require way more time than I have to spare.
Almost every single time, I end up settling on making one of two things: A veggie tray OR a meat, cheese and cracker tray.  Both always go over well and disappear quickly.
No longer will I feel like I’m settling. Once I hit publish this will be an official recipe, and that’s totally acceptable for a Lutheran potluck. 😉
This week for our Fat Tuesday celebration at church I took this big veggie tray & a small dip.
I used my mandolin slicer, a small cutting board and a knife.  Using a minimal amount of dishes/utensils makes clean up a snap!
This one had:
Cucumbers
Sliced Carrots
Sweet Mini Peppers
Cherry Tomatoes
Celery
With the dip, it cost me just under $10.
I also did a quick cheese and cracker tray that made it to the van before I could photograph it.
